Sow a Seed: Finding Freedom in Giving
Sep 29, 2025
When the world feels heavy...when stress, anxiety, depression, and overwhelm press in, our natural instinct is often to withdraw. We turn inward, fixating on our problems, rehearsing negative thoughts, and struggling to find gratitude. In that state, patience wears thin, frustration rises quickly, and even the people we love most can begin to irritate us.
But the very moment we feel like shutting down is when God invites us to do the opposite. Instead of retreating, we’re called to step outward. Instead of being consumed by our own emotions, we can choose to sow seeds into the lives of others.
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
— Galatians 6:2
Shifting the Focus
Each day, no matter what season we’re in, we have an opportunity to take the focus off ourselves and place it on others. That can look like:
-
Asking someone how you can pray for them.
-
Sending a word of encouragement.
-
Participating in a random act of kindness.
-
Speaking life into someone’s situation.
These small acts of sowing shift our energy, mindset, and spirit. They realign us with God’s calling and remind us that He can use us even in seasons of struggle.
Sow What You Need
The principle is simple: sow in the area where you feel the greatest lack.
-
If you’re struggling financially, bless someone else with generosity.
-
If you’re feeling discouraged, speak encouragement into another’s life.
-
If your marriage feels strained, choose to sow love into your spouse.
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”
— 2 Corinthians 9:6
It takes just as much energy to complain, dwell on the negative, or replay anxious thoughts as it does to sow a seed of kindness. The difference is that sowing unlocks joy, peace, and alignment with God’s purposes.
A Practical Habit
Great intentions often get lost in busy days. To help make sowing a daily habit, try carrying three small items in your pocket...paperclips, pebbles, or coins. Each one represents a life you want to bless that day. As you go about your errands, offer a compliment, send a prayer, or text encouragement. Each time you sow, move an item from one pocket to the other.
By day’s end, your tangible reminder will reflect seeds sown, not just in others’ lives, but in your own heart.
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
— Luke 6:38
The Call to Sow
Yes, it’s true that “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” However, over and over again God’s Word shows us that our cups are often filled not when we hold on, but when we give. Our emptiness is met with His abundance when we take our eyes off ourselves and look to the needs of others.
So when life feels heavy, when the weight presses in, push back. Do the opposite of what feels natural. Sow a seed, bless generously, and watch how God multiplies it, both in the lives you touch and in your own.
