What If I Fail? Reframing Doubt and Stepping Into Growth by Kristy Mast

Apr 29, 2025
We shouldn't be asking, "What if I fail?" We should be asking, "What if I fly?"

We’ve all been there—standing at the edge of something new, something that stretches us, something that demands more from us than we’ve ever given before. And right on cue, the doubts creep in:

What if I fail? What if this doesn’t work? What if I don’t have what it takes to go to the next level?

If these thoughts have been swirling in your mind, you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: These questions don’t have to be roadblocks. In fact, they can be the very thing that propels you forward—if you reframe them. Let’s shift the perspective.

1. What if I fail?

Failure isn’t the enemy. It’s the best teacher you’ll ever have. The most successful entrepreneurs, leaders, and visionaries have all failed—repeatedly. The difference? They saw failure as feedback, not as a final verdict.

Reframe it: What if I learn exactly what I need to succeed?

Every time you step into something new, you’re collecting data. If something doesn’t work, you adjust, pivot, and refine. Failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s a necessary step toward it.

2. What if it’s not successful?

Define success. Is it a certain number of likes, followers, clients, or revenue? Or is success the growth, the learning, and the impact you make along the way?

Most things don’t take off overnight. The leaders you admire didn’t wake up one day and suddenly have influence; they showed up consistently, even when they weren’t sure it would work.

Reframe it: What if this is the step that leads to my biggest breakthrough?

What if this project—even if it doesn’t turn out how you expect—sets you up for something even greater? Often, what feels like a detour is actually the path to something better than you imagined.

3. What if I don’t have what it takes to go to the next level?

Imposter syndrome shows up the most when we’re on the brink of growth. That feeling of doubt? It’s proof that you’re stretching beyond your comfort zone.

You’ve already tackled challenges before. You’ve already figured things out that once felt impossible. Why would this time be any different?

Reframe it: What if I already have what it takes, and I just need to trust God to work through me?

The next level doesn’t require a new you—it requires you to trust the version of you God sees. Growth is about expanding into the person you already are, the person He created you to be.

So, How Do You Move Forward?

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or paralyzed by these questions, try this:

  • Take baby steps. Instead of worrying about the entire journey, ask: What is one small action I can take today?
  • Set a timer and just start. Give yourself five minutes. Action leads to momentum.
  • Change your environment. A new space, movement, or even voicing your thoughts aloud can shift your mindset.
  • Remind yourself that clarity comes from action, not overthinking. You don’t need all the answers right now. You just need to take the next step.

Final Thought

There’s a version of you in the future who has already figured this out. She’s looking back at this moment, grateful that you didn’t let doubt win. Keep moving forward—one step at a time.

Because the better question isn’t “What if I fail?”
It’s “What if I fly?”
