The Leadership Edge: How Reading Transforms Your Mind, Message, and Momentum (and how to start) by Wes Mast

Jun 03, 2025

Have you heard this saying? "Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders should be readers."

There's a quote that’s especially meaningful to me by John Maxwell- "Most people who decide to grow personally find their first mentors in the pages of books." I've certainly found that to be true. You’ve probably heard the stat that you’re the average of the 5 people you hang around most…that means you can drastically increase your average by reading really good books by thought leaders and people who have been where you want to go.

My Journey with Books

Many years ago I had a realization that for me to continue to grow myself and my company, I was going to have to intentionally invest in my personal growth. Reading was a very accessible method of learning. There's so much useful and even life-changing information out there, and you can learn the way that's best for you. Audio books are a great way to sneak in some learning time when your hands are busy, but your mind is available. You can start off slow, like I did, but I found as I started to read more, I began to hunger more for it. Now I'm on pace to read a book a week.

3 Ways Reading Helps You Grow as a Leader

Books Help Leaders Think More Clearly and Strategically

📖 Reading causes you to think at a higher level as you're exposed to different thoughts from many different people and different ways of processing what you're thinking. You’re able to glean lessons that may have taken the author years and years to learn, but it’s available for you to learn in minutes or hours. It’s amazing how you notice repeating themes that seem to be exactly what you need at the right time.

How Reading Improves Your Communication Skills

📖 I heard a public speaker say once that if you want to get better at public speaking, read old books. You hear language being used differently. You'll learn the art of communication- the art of using language in a powerful way. As you're exposed to different perspectives and styles, it will help you craft your messages better and find your unique voice.

Relax, Learn, and Lead Better: The Self-Care Side of Reading

📖 Reading (done right) helps you relax and invest in yourself. You can lead a life where you're operating out of overflow, and not just trying to push all the time. I want to encourage you today to crack that book open. Level up your reading. If you push through that initial ceiling, you'll become a better thinker, a better communicator, and more effective at relaxing. Who doesn't need that?!
