The Climb Within: Start

Mar 10, 2026
starting takes courage

“You can’t climb standing still.”

Every transformation begins the same way — not with complete clarity, not with confidence, not with certainty. It begins with a step.

Most people don’t fail because they aren’t capable. They stall because they’re waiting to feel ready. But readiness is a myth.

I can 100% tell you I have never felt ready.  All the goals I set and accomplished never made me feel like “I arrived”. If you wait until you feel ready, you’ll be waiting at the base of the mountain forever.

The Awakening: There’s More

The first step doesn’t come from having a plan. It comes from an awakening.

A quiet realization that whispers, “This isn’t it - There is more.” That what you’re standing in — while familiar — is no longer sufficient. Not necessarily bad, just incomplete.

This is where many people stop.

They feel the nudge… and then talk themselves out of it.
They name the desire… and then silence it with logic, fear, or responsibility.

But awakening is sacred, and ignoring it hardens the heart.

Faith Always Precedes Clarity

We want clarity before movement. God offers clarity through movement. This is one of the great tensions of the climb within.

Faith does not require clarity. Faith does require action - taking a step...

You don’t get the full picture before the step. Faith steps without certainty. That’s not recklessness. That’s trust.

Clarity is rarely the starting point. It’s the reward for motion.  Taking the first step in faith is the starting point.

From Dreaming → Doing → Depending

Most people stay stuck in dreaming.

Dreaming is safe.
Dreaming costs nothing.
Dreaming never tests your faith.

Doing changes that.

The moment you move from dreaming to doing, fear shows up and starts shouting. Fear of failure, judgment, and of being wrong. And that’s when the climb reveals its deeper purpose — not just to move you forward, but to move you into dependence.

Doing teaches effort. Depending teaches trust. God doesn’t just want your action — He wants your reliance.

Peter and the First Step

Peter didn’t walk on water because he was brave; he walked on water because he stepped out in faithThe miracle wasn’t in the water — it was in the obedience.

The boat felt safer. The step felt foolish. But faith doesn’t ask if the water will hold. It asks if Jesus is calling. And when Peter stepped, the water held — not before. That’s how the climb begins.

Motion Builds Confidence

Confidence doesn’t come first. Motion does.

Action brings clarity (more on this in the second part of Start) Motion builds confidence.

Every step strengthens your faith muscles.
Every step teaches you something standing still never could.

You don’t need to reach or even see the summit.
You just need to take the next step.

God meets us in movement — not paralysis.

Start Where You Are

Starting doesn’t mean quitting your job, changing everything, or making a dramatic leap.

Sometimes starting looks like:

  • Having the conversation you’ve avoided

  • Saying yes to the opportunity you’ve been praying about

  • Saying no to what’s draining your calling

  • Taking one obedient step — even with shaking legs

The first step is rarely impressive. But it is always brave.

There is power in the Start. It is often the hardest step because we are figuring out where to go, which direction to take and often wondering if the first step is right or worth it or good enough or whatever else we say to ourselves during times of discomfort and doubt.

You don’t have it all figured out at the start. That is ok. Of course you don’t know it all at the beginning. You are in a phase of learning that can be frustrating. You are in a phase of trusting that can feel exposing.  You are in a phase of deepening your faith which can be scary.

The amazing truth about the Start is…you are just getting started. You have the ability to redirect. You will learn and get smarter as you keep walking the path. Don’t worry so much about knowing it all or being perfect as you start.

Listen to your peace. Seek wisdom. Ensure the destination is worthy. Now take a step so you can get on the path and beginning the journey of becoming.

Reflection: Standing at the Edge

  1. Where do you sense God stirring you toward “more” right now?

  2. What step have you been delaying because you wanted certainty first?

  3. What fear shows up most when you think about starting?

  4. What would obedience look like — even if clarity hasn’t come yet?

Closing Prayer

God, give me the courage to take the first step — even when I don’t have the full picture.
Help me trust You more than my need for certainty, and obedience more than my fear of failure.
Meet me in my movement, steady my faith, and lead me one faithful step at a time.

Amen.
